Sandra is one of the youngest seamstresses at Three Cords. Although only 22, her story is a true testimony to God’s restorative power in our lives and the nation of Haiti as a whole.
Sandra lost her leg in the earthquake of 2010, when her home collapsed upon her. This accident left Sandra traumatized and handicapped, making it difficult to go through everyday life. A year after the earthquake, Sandra met Diana, the founder of Three Cords. Diana, noticing Sandra was missing a leg, approached her and brought her to Mission of Hope to get her a prosthetic leg. Sandra soon after began working at Three Cords as a seamstress. She would come to work each morning and attend high school at Mission of Hope in the afternoons.
Although Sandra has since graduated, she continues to make the 1.5 hour commute from her home in Port-au-Prince to Mission of Hope Campus for work each morning. In the afternoons, she attends a university in Port-au-Prince, where she is studying to become a nurse. She looks forward to using this profession “to help others who have greater needs than herself.”
On the weekends, Sandra serves at her church singing in the choir and teaching little children Bible lessons. In her free time, she also loves playing with her niece and nephews and going to the beach.
Sandra is a light in our workshop and truly brightens up the room with her smile and beautiful singing voice. She loves her job at Three Cords and is a master at making all of the different products. She really enjoys working in a Christ-centered environment with other people like herself, who have lost a leg or have some sort of disability. She says this allows them to relate to one another’s attitudes and circumstances and ultimately love each other.
